Panel Lining Gunpla
There are several methods on drawing panel line on gunpla:
- Panel line wash/pin wash
- Lead pencil
- Gundam marker
Panel line wash is the common method that people recommend on forums on panel lining. But you need to know how to properly apply this method.
I remember the first time I tried making my own panel line wash since I want to save $$$. There is a ready to use product from tamiya that you can buy which is panel line accent color. But only comes in 3 different colors (black, grey and brown) so I though I just invest in tamiya enamel paint since I’ll start painting my gunpla anyway.
The plastic just cracked in several places because of two things
- I didn’t top coat the surface before using the DIY enamel wash.
- I left the enamel on the plastic too long.
Bandai plastics are known to be sensitive with enamel paint. So make sure you (top coat everything I mean everything from inner frames, joints and armor) before you’re doing panel lining with enamel base paint.
Since this tutorial is meant for gunpla beginners I won’t recommend using this method. Instead try using gundam markers. They are easy to use, inexpensive, can be use for weathering too and safe for plastic.
Gundam Marker Panel Lining
For panel lining I recommend using gundam marker pour type and gundam marker eraser to remove excess. Note that you cannot use gundam marker to paint your gunpla.
Here are the steps on panel lining using gundam markers:
- Trace the panel lines using the pour type marker or just press the tip lightly and the ink will follow through the panel line (by capillary action).
- Let it dry for a bit (3 - 5 minutes) then using gundam marker eraser and cue tip remove the excess.
- When you’re done working seal with top coat (optional).
